Rare Chippendale Bookcase Saved

A Chippendale rosewood breakfront bookcase which cost 47 pounds in 1759 and was expected to fetch between two million and four million pounds ($US4-8 million) at auction this week has been spared the hammer.

The bookcase was part of the Dumfries House estate, one of Britain's most stately homes.

The prestigious property has been saved from the auctioneer's hammer through the intervention of Prince Charles.

The Chippendale bookcase and the estate's other furniture were to be auctioned later this month.

The Prince of Wales engineered a 45 million pound rescue that will see Dumfries House taken over by the National Trust in Britain.

The property is expected to be opened to the public next year.

Chippendale Table Snatched

A 500,000 pound ($US1 million) Chippendale table has been snatched from a stately home in Yorkshire.

A gang targeting antiques stole the table from Newby Hall.

The table is regarded as a masterpiece and one of the finest tables made by the 18th century master craftsman.

The twin-leaf Pembroke table is famed for its elegant lines.

It has an inlaid mosaic of rosewood, satin and ebony pieces.
